Sieht man sich die Führungsstruktur der 500 umsatzstärksten Unternehmen (»Fortune 500«) an, fällt immer noch auf, dass mehr Männer mit dem Namen James in den Chefsesseln sitzen als Frauen. Wenn Melinda Gates darüber nachdenkt, dann tut sie das mit einer Mischung aus Zorn und Optimismus. Ihr Zorn ist schnell nachvollziehbar, beim Begriff Optimismus bleibt man dann aber doch ganz kurz hängen. Wie sie in einem Gastbeitrag für das TIME Magazine erklärt, ist dieser Optimismus Teil eines »Möglichkeitsfensters«, das sich in der jüngeren Vergangenheit für Frauen geöffnet hat: »A window of opportunity has opened. Or, more accurately, it was painstakingly pried open by the hundreds of thousands of people who have joined marches across the country, the millions of women who summoned the courage to tell their #MeToo-Stories the record number of women who ran for office in 2018 and won— and by the women who are working multiple jobs, caring for multiple loved ones, and proving you don’t have to protest or enter politics to challenge a system stacked against you. It wasn’t just grand gestures that got us here. It was daily acts of courage, too.«

In ihrem Beitrag weist Melinda Gates allerdings darauf hin, dass dieses Fenster nicht von selbst offen bleibt, sondern wieder zufällt, wenn es nicht aktiv offen gehalten wird. Um das zu verhindern, soll fortan eine Billion ihres Vermögens in Gender Equality fließen. Dazu sagt sie: »I want to see more women in the position to make decisions, control resources, and shape policies and perspectives. I believe that women’s potential is worth investing in—and the people and organizations working to improve women’s lives are, too.« Die äußerst beachtliche Summe soll in erster Linie dafür verwendet werden, Programme und Initiativen zu gründen und zu unterstützen, die sich der Förderung von Frauen im Berufsleben verschrieben haben. Dreh- und Angelpunkt dieser Maßnahmen soll Melinda Gates eigenes Investmentunternehmen »Pivotal Ventures « sein.

»There are too many possible solutions we haven’t tried yet. That’s why, over the next ten years, I am committing $1 billion to expanding women’s power and influence in the United States.«
